Yeti, Big foot, Sasquatch, are all names of this 7 to 8 foot animal that has been taped and photographed for years. Whether you believe it or not the Big foot of the Everglades, locally called the Skunk Ape, has been seen by locals and tourists in Everglades National Park and in Big Cypress National Preserve.  There are Skunk Ape videos, photos, and accounts right in the area of the swamp and mangroves.  For those who believe in the Skunk Ape they think the Everglades and Big Cypress environments are great places for a yeti to live.

According to research, Skunk Apes are omnivorous. They eat the roots and fruits of local flora. They will also eat bird nestlings right out of their nests, catch turtles, and many other animals.  The Skunk Ape supposedly lives in alligator dens and that is why they are called Skunk Apes from the sulfur smell that abounds in Big cypress and Everglades swamps.

Within fifteen minutes of the Smallwood Store is the Skunk Ape Research Center owned and operated by David Shealy.  If you are interested in learning about the Skunk Ape and want to hear an eye witness account then David Shealy is the man to talk to.

The Trails of Lakes Campground is right next to the Skunk Ape Research Center. There is a great snake and exotic bird exhibit and a gift shop at the campground.  For all of you that have every seen Harry and the Henderson’s this is a fun and great place to visit.
